  • The Orange Empire
Upon visiting their parents in 1880, Canadian brothers George and W.B. Chaffey decided to set up home in the Orange Empire. The brothers selected an alluvial plain at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains about 10 miles northwest from their parents' Riverside home. This initial colony was named Etiwanda.

George's house soon had the first hydroelectric system in the western US as well as the first long-distance phone connection in Southern California. So impressed was the City of Los Angeles with George's electric system that he was tapped to assist Los Angeles in developing one of the first full-scale electric lighting systems in the world.

Following the success of Etiwanda, the Chaffey brothers purchased more of the San Antonio and Cucamonga rancho options and began plotting yet another town. This town, to be named after their hometown in Canada, was to become present-day Ontario.

However, just four years after establishing the colony, the Chaffey brothers left in 1886 and headed for Australia. Local townsman Charles Frankish bought the Chaffey's colony and eventually led the town towards incorporation in 1891.

In 1902, the northern portion of the colony - yet to be officially incorporated into Ontario - proclaimed independence and by 1906 had separately incorporated as the City of Upland.
